cuz it was invented here......
Also americans aren't afraid to get rough and show their athletic ability with out the use of steroids (except Merriman)
But yeah its a way to chill with your buddies and family to enjoy an ice cold coke and watch boys down on the field get dirty and play their hearts out to win a game for the Fans.
Plus the game has skill :)

It is a challenging tough sport. It requires a combination of strength, speed and agility. You have linemen who can bench press 500lbs and weigh 300 lbs. So you have like five wrestling matches on the line between great athlete. Sometimes it shifts to two on one. You also have near world class speed at the WR positions and defensive back positions. You have some of the best throwers in any sport. You have kickers who can kick the ball with skill and power. You have last second heroics. You have players taking tremendous shots (like Bush against the Eagles) and getting back up and running with force the next play.
I don't know why Rugby fans can't appreciate the differences. Rugby is a fine sport but don't even try to tell me that the passing aspect of football does not make it an entirely different sport. The long bomb or the diving leaping catch are some of the funnest things to watch in any sport.

It's perfectly designed for television and it is marketed much better than the other sports.
I mean, the sport is good and exciting but so are other sports. But Football sets it self apart for many non-sport related reasons.
Fits neatly into a 3 hr time slot with a big snack break in the middle.
Only one game a week, so it leaves you hungry for more. That also makes the games scarce and the tickets hard to come by which makes it seem more valuable.
The play is paced so that there is time for lots of replay of everything.
The players look great in their uniforms.
Their helmets and facemasks make them nearly anonymous, so that you never get too attached to anyone and don't mind when new guys replace the old guys.
The carefully regulate competition to keep competitive balance.
- That being said, baseball attendance and revenue is much higher than football's. The average hockey fan are much more intense about their own team than the average football fan. And people probably play a lot more basketball than then play football.

I think there are several reasons. First, it is violent, but not too violent. Most women are not going to be appalled at it, but most guys aren't going to think it too wimpy. Second, there aren't that many games. This makes every game important, and makes it easy too keep track of what is going on in the sport. Third, more than any other sport, it is about conquoring your enemy. You either march the football up enemy lines, looking for holes in their defense until you can reach your objective, or you take a stand against your enemy, determined that they will not get past you. That is what Americans find entertaining, just look at most of our movies. Finally, any one play doesn't last that long in American Football. Americans aren't known for having very long attention spans, but even the worst sufferer of ADD can watch one play, and have time to be distracted and then watch the next play.

Because the fans do not have to think and there are enough breaks in the action for food and drink. The American attention span, mostly, is very short. They could not watch a half of football (soccer) because of no time outs.
I am an American who really does not like NFL. CFL is much better and also most football (soccer). Hell, the Arena Football is better than NFL.

It is the most enjoyable sport we have to watch for the average person. Plus it is only played one time per week so the excitement is jacked up a level.
Baseball is clearly a very close second though.

Because for most teams fans, excluding the Bears and the Eagles, it's a healthy, fun way to get together with friends and family and even opposing team fans and exercise good clean rivalry. My experience with all other teams beside the two above have been just that. Have even made friends with rival fans. Bears and Eagles fans have always been vulgar and abusive. If you are a fan of either and are not that way, thanks for being curteous and please pass it on to the a holes who ruin it for others.

Because soccer (English football) is so boring. They run up and down the field and nobody gets tackled. Who wants to sit and watch that? American football= running, tackling, passing, catching, kicking. Much more fun to watch.

I didn't realise it was. I thought that glorified rugby they play, or that variation of rounders was America's favourite sport.
