known friends as in a guy's best friend's girlfriend or a male kissing a co-workers wife when they meet at the office after a long time.
I feel would i be offending someone if i dont do that when faced in the situation, cause i wont want - a simple hand shake would do.

I UNDERSTAND, HOWEVER IT IS A CULTURAL TRADITION THAT PERSONS LEARN.

in Spain, it is the custom to kiss friends and family in the cheek twice, even when someone is introduced by friends or family, instead of shaking hands. FRANCE MORE OR LESS THE SAME, Russia they do and sometimes in the mouth too. so I GUESS it depends were are you from and what is the tradition.

Nevertheless, shaking hands, has been and is an occidental custom and is understood by all other cultures as so. So just shaking hand is also OK

yeah i find it awkward... on the otherhand it's normally just a little kiss on the cheek.

it's not even that intimate... it's hard to know WHAT to do i.e. should i kiss, or should i hand shake, because we don't have a proper convention to regulate it. The French kiss on both cheeks every time they meet.
