Yes it is a good movie but the book tells the story so much better. Didn't know it was set in Malta. I love Malta.

Which version? (oh sorry, obviously not the Donat one if it was made in Malta)! It's a great book/story.

I preferred the Robert Donat version myself. Maybe because it felt less modern and old hollywood romantic!

As long as it's well made and has a handsome lead, I;ll watch any version.

I'm sorry to disagree with you there and I believe the box office ratings agrees with me.
It was a good attempt, but like the book (by Alexander Dumas) it was largely unteresting for a story about revenge. The story was dragged on too long and it didn't follow what Mark Twain always said about how humor should be present in whatever story. That element was overlooked completely.

Yeah its great. Tale of betrayal, corruption and the ability of the human spirit to endure tremendous agony, but survive through it....

and also teaches that the pusuit of outright revenge is not always the best course... as revenge can corrupt a person too.. and hurt innocent people on the way.

first : the COUNT OF MONTE CHRISTO.
the only decent/excellent version i 've seen would be the french tv version in 4/5 long episodes with mighty DEPARDIEU as Christo, filmed in B&W, 10 years ago or so.
the most recent movie with Pierce had me shouting in frustration. they made it more simple and skipped things. either you do a GOOD version or don't bother HOllywood!
