you pay all that money just for the bbc whose programmes are rubbish anyway. all the other channels are paid for by adverts. if we can put up with adverts on the other channels, then we can put up with adverts on the bbc as we are used to it. sky have adverts every 15 minutes and they pay for the sky too yet we still have to pay sky as well so they get double money for their programmes from us. if you have sky then you know their adverts are more often than the tv channels. if we have to put up with sky's frequent adverts then i am sure we can put up with the bbc adverts and get rid of the tv licence

Well at the very least they could reduce the licence fees, but I must admit it is a pleasure watching BBC without bloody adverts coming on every 15 minutes driving you mad, there seem to be more adverts than programmes.

Well if you did scrap the fee you'd end up with even crappier telly to watch and, God forbid, a type of telly like the USA. Short programme bites, then adverts, then a short programme bite, then MORE adverts. You'd end up a moron with a short attention span (if there are any American's reading this I'm not having a go at you...just the programme content as an example for this answer)

At least the BBC does present some great, quality telly and offer some top quality services to the whole world, not just the the UK. I enjoy more BBC programmes because of this format.

I hate having to buy a license each year but if you really are hacked off at having to pay...complain to your MP (if you are a UK citizen) or write to the BBC for a 59 page reply on where your money goes and why they take it.

I'd sooner pay a fee than be dictated to by people wanting even more of your money to buy their products. Beware...if we only had commercial channels then BIG BROTHER will not be faRr behind...and I don't mean the GOODY clan coming to stay in your house!!

The problem as I see it is the BBC is funded through the licence fee and should this be withdrawn where will the funding come from for so many of the good dramas etc that they make and show. I know there is a lot of garbage on there as well but without the funding the shows on there would have to be financed through adverts and we will run into more trash shows that the other channels show. Surveys already show that the younger generation do not watch TV so much and this is being taken on board by advertisers who will withdraw the adverts unless the trend stops. No adverts no shows. If you look at the sites the youngsters go on on the net, you will see more and more ads on there because that is where they spend much of there time. So NO I do not think that the licence fee should be scrapped. To make matters worse there are recorders that are coming on the market that will record shows, run them say 60 mins later and when you see the show adverts will be taken out. Who is going to advertise on there when this is going to happen. So things do not look to healthy for home entertainment. No ads no commercial TV so keep the TV licence fee. My info is only from what I have read in papers etc.

You know John, If they did scrap the TV licence fee they would probably try to claw it back some other way.
In my opinion you are wrong about the programmes on the BBC, In general, they have the classiest dramas, the best series for children i.e. Narnia, Dr Who etc. and the world renown Documentaries, to name but a few. Many Brits abroad rely on the BBC foreign service to enable them to enjoy some of the programmes they miss by being away from home.
maybe they should make TV sets that only get ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 then people with the same views as yourself can opt out of paying the licence fee!

Yes yes yes I DO think it should be scrapped! Paying for the privelege of BBC channels is one thing, but paying for what is now a commodity of modern life is totally another.

In my old digs, I never had a tv. That didnt stop the TV Licensing people bugging me every 6 months, turning up at my door, asking why i hadnt purchased a licence!!!

Dont watch the thing if I can help it, even with a thousand channels, theres nothing on anyway.

I only watch the breakfast show on BBC 1,and that's only for the traffic and weather,i certainly don't bother with it at any other time.
I do agree that it should be scrapped, because as you say,we're paying for services twice, and we're the ones being ripped off, with the crap programs that are being shown, not counting the repeats.
If all t.v stations agreed to it,then i doubt if we would mind so much, but the fact that it's only the BBC,it really does make you simmer.
If this question was put in a public survey,i reckon over 99% of people would agree to see it scrapped.

I hate paying the licence fee. I cannot remember a time in recent history where i have used one single BBC resource. Therefore why should i pay ? For anyone, who, like me, does`nt use the BBC, you may as well walk up to a stranger and give him £131.50. Just because a person is capable of receiving BBC does`nt mean they have to pay for it. It should be scrapped, it`s crap.

My brother in law (who is called john) is always on about this, he thinks we should be able to choose to watch bbc or not and someone should invent a devise to block bbc on your tv meaning you pay no tv licence. I agree that the bbc are out of order and every year we seem to be paying more?Bottom line is they have got us by the short and curlies and there is nothing we can do about it!

Yes - scrap it - make it a pay per view or optional channel
BBC are the only company that makes you pay a licence just for having a TV, even if you don't watch it.

NO OTHER COMPANY COULD GET AWAY WITH THAT.

It is outmoded and outdated.

They say they cannot advertise to produce revenue but they do advertise their own programs and Radio Times, the hypocrites.
