Books. Teach him/her (you didn't specify) how to read. Start off with Dr. Seuss, then get them a library card so they can pick out what they want when you take them there (which you must). They will pick out what interests them, and this will tip you off to what they have interests in. Once you know this, encourage them in their interests. If they are the best in their chosen field, they will be successful. Teach 'em while they're young. And encourage them to teach themselves. My parents did a pretty good job, I think.

make them up a special ticket with gold paper etc for an adventure - then take them on the train or the bus (kids love trains and busses~) and get off at different stops. The first stop could be to the park to feed the ducks then get on another bus and the next destination could be to go ice skating or the cinema and then hop on a train and go for a bite to eat somewhere - if u plan it well and mix between busses and trains u really could give this kid a lovely adventure that they'll remember forever- far better than a rubbishy plastic toy that breaks after a few weeks!

A gift card! WalMart has some really cool gift cards. My dad and step mom send my kids them for birthdays. So far they have superman, tinkerbell, cinderella, cars, etc...! And when the child is done spending the money on the card, they have a really cool card with an awesome picture on it. (it's like their own personal credit card)
