I have no idea but my husband swears there is a book that opens with this line.

It's "How Many Miles to Babylon" by Jennifer Johnston. The character speaking here is the narrator, Alec. The short novel tells of the friendship beginning in childhood in turn of the century Ireland and ending in World War 1 between Alec, from the "Big House" and Jerry, a boy from the local village.
