Thank you for your responses, and a recent movie that mastered the art of 'twists' is "The Illusionist". Definitely check this one out.

Barely an answer, but the trouble with discussing films with twist endings is that to even no in advance that there is a twist can ruin it.

I'm not particularly a fan of twist endings, as if you see it coming, it is frustrating waiting for the film to get to it. I felt that way about Sixth Sense - There was no real need for the very first scene with Bruce Willis getting shot, and that tipped me for the ending.

I would recommend films where the story has multiple twists throughout. One I would recommend is an Australian film called "Lantana", which blind-sided me several times. You really aren't sure where the story is going, and it usually goes differently from you expect. (Be warned, it is quite a slow character piece, but very well done).

This is a rather unfair question because everyone will have their own favourite and everyone's opinion will be different. Also, there are so many good movies with good twisting plots - in their own ways, such that no one particular film can claim as being "The BEST"

I, myself, have seen many movies which I think has a good twist. One movie in particular that always comes to mind is an old black and white film (made before 1960) called "Witness for the prosecution" - love the twist at the very very end. Another was a tv movie made in the 70's (or 80's?) called "Rehearsal for murder".

Anyway - that is my opinion. And thanks for the two points

Strictly on storyline, beginning to end, I'd say the Godfather.
And only speaking of storylines I'd absolutely include even the third movie, while extremely poorly executed, the 3rd movie had a great "ending" to the Godfather lineage.

As far as twist, I personally loved Fight Club and will freely admit I didn't see it coming, allthough every time I watch it, I'm like daaaaamn, how did i miss THAT!?!??

Also The Crying Game, nice twist, though a passable movie at best

How about Memento? Or Fightclub, Unbreakable, the Sixth Sense for movies where I didn't pick the "twist". The Island is pretty good too. And how about the first time you watched Terminator II, Rise of the Machines, if you didn't know that Arnie's character had come back as the good guy. I was lucky enough to watch that at the cinema when it first came out and no one had revealed this to me. That scene where he first appears at the hospital was very intense! Of course the viewer was already aware that he was a good guy this time because he was with the son, but having just found out myself, I could so feel for her, the mum, was her name Sarah?

well there r lots. The Machinist was a punch in the face.
the House Of the Spirits ( from Allende's novel with Irons and Streep, ages ago) had many layers/generations.
Seven for obvious reasons.
as for the Usual Suspects, watched it recently again and it sounds still too far-fetched to be a great twist...
can't think of others yet...

The best last line I read was in a murder mystery set in Victorian England. A man was suspected of having murdered his wife. Since they could not prove this they could not enter the home so that the police set up watch to catch him trying to dispose of the body. after a week they called in a private detective to figure out what was going on. He found that the man chopped wood every day, brought only vegetables to eat and brought a sauce used only on meat. In the end the PI took the Inspector aside to give his report. His Boswell strains to hear the explanation and catches only "...the chopping of the wood was only to build of an appetite."
