Conditions: I live in a suburb of Los Angeles; it drizzled earlier in the day; there was a slight breeze; it was after nightfall; the ice was on the glass of one car, and the fabric of the other's cover; and my thermometer's reading at this moment is 5° below the reading at the weather station located one mile away, and 1° above the reading from The Weather Channel's website.

Jorganos did not get it quite right. The reason that cause frost to form is mainly due to heat radiation, much like the way the sun transfer its energy onto earth. When the surrounding temperature is low enough, the surface of your car would lose heat to radiation and drop below freezing point, which induces frost to form.

This phenomenon is espeically active on a clear cloudness night, even when the temperature is not near freezing point, in which the heat radiation shoots straightly into space without returning. To keep the frost to the minimum, either put a cover on the car, or park in the shaded area. Play with that a bit, :-)

Imbalanced heat radiation.

Surfaces looking up radiate heat into the sky, but a clear sky radiates little back. As a result, these surfaces may cool down below surrounding temperature. When surrounding temperature is around freezing, the heat loss to the sky may cause ice to form.

Seriously, wtf? I woke up this morning to a big line of snow/sleet just sitting on my balcony. Not to mention this entire last week has felt like we are living in alaska.

I have NEVER felt it this cold in LA.
