He is having a diarrhea at the moment and seems like he'll have it for a while since it is a side effect from his intestine surgery.

When my sons have had excessive diarrhea they would have severe redness and irritation in that area. The best thing to do is to have more frequent changings and then lube on a diaper rash ointment... The best that have worked for me is Balmex Ointment or Desitine Cream. Also to help with relief I would bath them in warm water to soothe the area.

Call the doctor and ask for "butt paste" (you may have to make an appointment). It's a mixture of nystatin, desitin, and a powder that absorbs moisture. It sounds like he might be getting a yeast rash because of the moisture against his skin. If so Desitin alone won't do the job. Until you get to see the doc slather it up good with Desitin when the diaper is on and leave the diaper off when you can. Also, don't use regular wipes, use water as wipes irritate rashes.

Poor baby! I hope he feels better soon.

Im sorry to hear about that. My baby also had a minor rash for a few days due to diarrhea. What I did was air out the area for half an hour a day and also left her diaper off for longer then usual during changes. I put some penaten on her bum to keep the moisture from touching the skin and some zinc oxide on her bottom underneath the penaten. Her diaper rash looked pretty bad, almost rough and patchy in some parts but the important thing of taking off the rash was putting on the penaten or somethign like it to prevent moisture from touching the skin..airing out the bum is good too...and my baby likes it better when shes neked.

You need to try several things....change his wipes so that they are for newborns/sensitive skin or use plain old water to wash him. Let him dry thoroughly before placing a new diaper on him. whenever possible, let him just "hang out" as the air will help dry up the rash, give hi a bath in water and baking soda (also helps dry up the rash) and this may sound a little weird, but slather him in bag balm (ask the pharmecist at your local walmart or drug store) in between diapers (it creates a barrier to new irritation and has an added ingredient that aids healing). If your son is on antibiotics as a result of his surgery, this could seriously irritate the area too...he may have a yeast infection, which would mean you need prescription cream for the area. Also, go to health food store and ask about probiotics that you can add to his food (these will help replenish the healthy bacteria in his intestinal tract, which will kill off the unhealthy bacteria and yeast overgrowth) Ultimately, if it doesn't start to clear up in a day or two after trying these things, you need to take him back to the doctor.

Both my sons experienced severe rashes growing up (one had chronic ear infections requiring antibiotics until he got tubes in his ears. The other chronic strep requiring antibiotics until he had his tonsils removed. Once they could stop taking the antibiotics, they rarely had any kind of rash)...a combination of the above things help clear things up and keep them in check during outbreaks.

Change the nappy more frequently and clean the gently.

You can even use a wet hand towel if you need to really get in there and give it a good clean or get him in a basin of water and rinse the area.

Try to use alot of baby rash cream..we have pawpaw ointment in Australia, don't know if you have it where you are but give it a go and see how it works.

All the best

Johnson's nappy cream is quite good, it's really thick & soothing for their rash. If not, there might be something slightly more medicated/ using natural products you can get from a pharmacy if you ask in there? I've heard calendula cream is quite good.

Also don't use wipes to clean him, just water & cotton wool.

For a few minutes each day let him kick about with his nappy off, just put some kitchen roll underneath him for the inevitable accidents! :)

Put more nappy cream, and try using cloth diaper, it is more cooling. Let the baby doctor have a look at his condition. They may prescribe some cream for him. Use cotton balls with some water to clean him if he has diarrhea. This instruction was given to me by a nurse, when my girl has diarrhea quite sometime ago

The best thing to use on your son right now is Vaseline. It is non scented.

This creates a barrier between the pee/wet and the skin.

Dont use anything like sudocream as this is scented and will make the rash worse.

A nice warm bath can sometimes sooth it also.

Good Luck

have you tried giving him pedalite or ricealite (those are probably misspelled)..to help get the diarrhea stopped......my kid had a colostomy reversal at eight months..and he had diarrhea really bad afterwards...I called the surgeon and he told me to give him ricealite and if that didn't help get it stop by the next day..to take him to the ER.....don't let this go on to long...he could dehydrate on you before you know it....

a lot of people swear by desitin..but this stuff burnt my kid up .... I tried just about every product on the market trying to get him cleared up and I ended up finding a wonderful product called balmex and it cleared him up in no time flat....also, don't use baby wipes on him..the oil and perfume may make it worse..just use soap and water and dry him really good.....and keep his diaper changed......if you can...let him go without one on for as long as you can..so the air will help dry it...

I hope your little guy gets to feeling better soon...........

desitine is a Godsend, use that on the rash, wash him thoroughly, do not use wipes because the chemicals in it irritates the rash. try corn starch in the bath water. let him lay around naked and dry up and when hes dry down there put some corn starch on the rash. good luck
