Hi Delilah,

Why do you want to like it? Or, why do you "hate" it?

If you really want to understand it, then you need to learn something about math, and not just the memorizing and testing that happens at school all the time. Why not get a book about math, like "The Man who Loved Only Numbers" and spend the weekend reading, see what all the mathematicians do every day, living with a love for mathematics.

I hated all the boring, repetitive things about math, but when I discovered Vectors, and then analysis, calculus, and logic, I found math to be very beautiful subject to learn and contemplate.

However, that was not in High school. And, I still had to work at it, but the work became interesting, and the results eye-opening.

If you really don't like math, or you can see no beauty in it, then find what you love and pursue that. If you need some math to succeed, then you will motivate yourself. If you don't, then calculators and programs will do the math for you, and those will be created by people who are doing what they love.

If you need the math now, to get a credit for graduation or to finish a pre-req, then look in the mirror, and ask yourself what reward will make you finish this class with a passing grade? Then, find a way to give yourself that reward, or get your BF, Parents, someone, to give you that reward when you finish successfully.

Good luck with the decision-making on what you really want to do. If you want it bad enough, the details will take care of themselves.

If you are in the United States, no matter what you want to be in life, most universities will require that you complete certain math courses to get your degree. For most people this is usually just algebra and maybe statistics. Some people end up using some algebra or statistics in their careers and so find what they learned in math class useful. If you plan on going into a science field you will most likely have to finish calculus. If you do go into a science field the math will be a tool which you will find very useful and will also start taking on more applicable meaning for you.

Not all math is the same. People who are good at arithmatic may be bad at algebra. Some people are only good at calculus, or trigonometry. Some people may not have their time tables memorized but maybe they excel at advanced topography.

I can't make you like math but I can tell you how to get it done and out of the way faster so you can do things you do like.

When you don't understand something in class, immediatly stop the instructor and ask them to explain better. They aren't mind readers and don't know when you don't understand something unless you trell them.

Immediatly after class try a few homework problems while it's still fresh in your head. Even if homework isn't assigned. Most math problems just have a few basic steps that need to be memorized to solve them. This is like memorizing a recipe.

Get tutoring. Many schools offer at least some degree of tutoring. If you can't find a tutor find the smartest kid in the class and ask them to help you. Most smart people like to help others understand something they know really well and will do it for free.

If you get stuck on a problem and can't figure it out after a few minutes, mark it for later and move on to the next problem. This will help you get done what you know at least.

Math is an interesting subject.....it can be frustrating too...... Its not the problem of maths that you don't get it right......you just keep telling your-self that you can't do it.......don't be discouraging........keep working harder..... try doing at least 10 math problems a day ...... or try sitting down for an hour or two with friends and work out problems daily.......you'll start liking it.... it worked out 4 me!!! Never give up.....it takes time, so just be patient....
Good luck!!!

Hi

Actually Maths is a fantastic subject. It is all about logic. Simple as 1 + 1 = 2. All you need to convince yourself is that in daily life you need to be able to count, calculate so that people do not fool you. So better take precautions right now.

What more than Grades would motivate you!?
Anyway it's not as hard as it sometimes seems. Think with a clear mind and study only when you are feeling fresh and relaxed.
