#1 is maintenance.
Be sure the air filter is clean, spark plugs are new and the spark plug wires are okay.
#2 Check that the tires are pumped to the fullest safe pressure allowed on the sidewall.
#3 No jack rabbit starts, they can cut gas mileage in half. Slow down much sooner before a red light and you will save gas and wear on the brakes.
#4 Don't let the engine sit and idle for a long time
#5 Be certain you don't have a gas leak somewhere
#6 Check the gas level when you park your car and recheck it when you come back to be sure no one is sucking gas out of your tank

Fuel mileage sure sucks! If you do a lot of stop and go driving you will get bad gas mileage as opposed to someone who drives the freeway. Take your foot off the pedal a little more when you take off from a stop that might help a little. Go to Gasbuddy.com they might have some hints!

Depending on the year/make/model...
You may need:
A tune-up-Spark-plugs-wires-cap-rotor, air filter, fuel filter,
Check you tire pressure,
Check to see if a or brake or two are slightly holding..."as you drive"
it could a combo of all these things, and/or others too...
Good Luck

Please be more specific there are many causes. It can be your oxygen sensors have gone bad which makes your engine run too lean/rich. another cause can be revving the engine at high rpms = eats gas faster
