It is possible to make money writing children's books. Look at the success of Harry Potter. You need to find a literary agent, and ask questions there. I wouldn't think that there would be a problem with writing for more than one genre. I would think that it would be an advantage. Good luck.

The amount of money you will get all depends on the publisher and how many books you sell and as far as I'm aware Literary Agents and publishers should accept more than one genre. A good way to find an agent is though "The Writers and Artist Year Book 2007" it's what J.K. Rowling used.
Good Luck

I have to contradict one of the answer's replies. No, I wouldn't quit my day job if you wound up going into children's publishing. Unless you're an established children's author, like Judy Blume and Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, you won't be able to live solely on earnings from book sales. EVERYone thinks they can write a children's book, and because of this, there is an oversaturation of children's books in the market. The challenge comes in writing a book that will engage children AND be different from everything that stands out there. Ask anyone in publishing: Children's publishing is the most difficult genre to break into. Agencies and publishers will, of course, consider you if you've written in other genres. It would be ideal if you had a history within the genre, but it's not necessary. I recommend you figure out what age group you'd like to write for, then go to the bookstore and spend a good long time going through the books that are out there for your target group. Read a few of them if you can. Take notes on what's on the shelves (keep in mind, go to the bigger bookstores, not the book sections of places like Target or Walmart. Those books are selected from a list and don't accurately represent the market). Read through Publishers Weekly. Lastly, try to pinpoint what's NOT on the shelf, and that should be the hole you try to fill. Best of luck!

I'm not sure about children's books in comparison to adult novels. You might want to try http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/
It is a writing community with a discussion forum where you can post questions and get answers from experienced writers. And they occasionally have guest agents and editors who are willing to answer questions. There is a thread specifically for Children's writing, so someone should definitely be able to answer your question there. This site has a wealth of helpful information and informative articles.
Good luck in pursuing your dream!

Yes! Very Good Money In Childrens Books & a constant demand for new ones that might become a classic. Every publishers dream, but:
YOU NEED AN AGENT & NOT ONE WHO WANTS MONEY OF ANY KIND UP FRONT NO MATTER HOW SINCERE HIS EXPLAINATION. REMEMBER A GOOD AGENT WORKS VERY HARD TO GET HIS CLIENTS PUBLISHED. HE KNOWS IF HE KEEPS YOU HAPPY, HE WILL REAP REWARDS FOR EVERY BOOK YOU SELL. THE MORE HE CAN GET YOU PUBLISHED, THE MORE $$$$ HE AND YOU MAKE.
TYPE IN YAHOO SEARCH "Agents Childrens Books"
The listings of sites begins with:
# 1. Agents for CHILDRENS book Writers & Publishers
a PRIMER at www.underdown.org/agents.htm
Too many links to list. BEWARE THE .com ADS
Research, research. Its your skills & if you write pay a small percentage more for an agent that a major publisher will authenticate for you.

It is very difficult to break into the children's book field. And payment is low. For every J.K. Rowling, there are thousands and thousands of people who make very little money, let alone get published.
There are agents who represent more than one genre but it's rare that they'll represent both children's books and adult fiction/non-fiction authors. You may have to get two agents.

J. K. Rowling has done ok! Though as far as I can remember, her first Harry Potter book was turned down by some publishers. It just goes to show that if you believe in yourself then you have to keep promoting your work.
Good Luck.
