The police have NO RIGHT to know where you came from or where you're going, although they will make you believe that they do. Police lie for a living--the supreme court has upheld that the police have the right to lie to suspects, and that lack of knowledge of your civil rights is no excuse for not exercising them. Therefore it is up to you to know your rights and protect them, as the police will do everything in their power to intimidate you into giving them up.
You never have to speak to the police under any circumstances, with or without a lawyer, unless you decide to do so. The exception to this is that you are required under the law to give them your name and address if asked. If you don't, they can arrest you. Otherwise, they cannot arrest you for refusing to answer their questions without probable cause. Keep in mind that the police "invent" probable cause all the time, so the chances are if they want to bring you in for the night, they will do so, albeit deceptively.

Although you have no legal obligation to do so, and it may not be any of their piggly damn business, it is always a good idea to cooperate. They are doing their job protecting public safety and probably know more than you do about what's going on in the area. So be truthful, be polite and be thankful that they are there.

No you do not..... you may keep walking without saying a word unless the police officer has a reasonable suspicion or probable cause. You might want to ask the police officer the reason for the contact and if he says he just wants to talk to you, you may leave, but you should clarify this before you walk away to avoid any misunderstandings. The police officer may think you are someone else, or you may fit the description of someone who has just commited a crime, and if you walk away you may be handcuffed or hurt. As for Miranda rights, they do not apply in this situation, as Miranda right apply only when a person is in CUSTODY and there is questioning, so to avoid sounding like an idiot don't say something like "My Miranda rights say I don't have to talk to you." Being polite will make your encounter a good one, unless you have done something wrong, then in that case...RUN!

If you are a minor it doesn't matter wheather you tell them where you're going or not because they can take you anyway. If you are driving a vehicle and have your full license (because 1:00a.m. to 5:00a.m., unless you're going to or from work, you can't legally drive a vehicle without a full license), the police officer has to have a reason to pull you over, so if you're not doing anything wrong or illegal, I wouldn't worry about it. But then again if you are doing something illegal and they suspect that you are, and they question you and you don't answer them, I'm sure they can (maybe not arrest you) but check your vehicle and take you in for questioning, (which then you could get an attorney, if you didn't want to talk without one present).

In most States, a cop can detain you for up to 24 hours for no reason at all. They don't have to give you one either. Confrontation with a Cop will only result in your getting more grief and losing more time.

I think it would be very prudent to tell him and politely. Policemen have a lot of lee-way when handing out tickets. If you are rude, they might be inclined to throw the book at you. You sound like you are about 16.

I think it is wise to tell it to them. They are there to help you around and if there is some problem on the route ahead they can guide you accordingly.

You don't have to tell him anything BUT
you'll only make the situation worse if you don't.
When I tried that route I ended up downtown.

You actually don't have to tell them. I would prefer to tell them as it would avoid unnecessary delays to wherever you are going, if you give a suspicious answer.
