The egg lives for about a day. A man's sperm can live inside a woman's body for about six days. Because the sperm can "wait" for an egg for six days, fertilization of a woman's egg is more likely from intercourse before or during ovulation than from intercourse following ovulation.
When an ovum is developing in an ovary, it is encapsulated in a sac known as a follicle. On maturity of the ovum, the follicle and the ovary's wall rupture, allowing the ovum to escape and enter the fallopian tube. There it travels toward the uterus, pushed along by movements of cilia on the inner lining of the tubes. This trip takes hours or days. If the ovum is fertilized while in the fallopian tube, then it implants in the endometrium when it reaches the uterus, which signals the beginning of pregnancy.

Tecnically life begins at fertilization, i.e. When a sperm enters the Ovum( Egg) in the fallopian tube.
Implantation of this fertilized egg in the uterus then occurs 5-6 days later.
The lady is diagnosed as pregnant , after she misses her
period by the Pregnancy test as early as 2 days over due.
Ovulation BTW occurs 14 days prior to expected date of period.
