Meaning

My husband or my wife.

Origin

This term wasn't originally restricted to referring to one's spouse as we use it now, but to a dear friend. It was used that way by the Roman poet Horace and later by Statius. The allusion then was to a friend so dear that he/she was more than half of a person's being. That meaning persists, although these days, if the term is used seriously rather than sarcastically, it is generally considered to mean 'the superior half of a married couple'. That is, better in quality rather than in quantity.

Sir Philip Sidney was the first to put into print the use of this phrase to mean spouse, in The Countesse of Pembrokes Arcadia, 1580:

"My deare, my better halfe (sayd hee) I find I must now leaue thee."

Don't Take The Sentence too Literally .

Married couples everywhere relate to husband-and-wife team Harriet and Stanley Parker of "The Better Half." Their quest to keep the "spark" alive in their aging marriage brings a knowing smile to readers around the world. The adventures of the quintessential couple appear in the paperback collection, "Randy Glasbergen?s The Better Half, Living Happy Never After," which was published by CCC Publications in 1997. And, after 40 successful years, cartoonist Randy Glasbergen continues to attract new readers with his fresh, topical humor. The Parkers may not be runway models, but to their many readers, they rank among the hottest couples in the comics!

Not necessarily their better half, but they are their help mates. Virtually all sucessful men have needed the support of their wives to allow them to follow their dreams and passions to do the amazing things that they do.

Without out them it wouldn't be possible to achieve what we do.

Read the biography of Abigail Adams if you want to see what a truly wonderful wife is like and how they allow greatness to be achieved.

Lol. The origin of the word "better half" is obscure, but was intended to be a self deprecating introduction used by gallant men of their wives acknowledging them to be the superior person of the marital union. Women got in on this one and often say the same things of their husbands.

No. Wives are selfish. They need everything. They do NOT want to give anything. My wife love tea. She take tea. I love lassi. I am NOT getting lassi. I never offer her lassi. I never dislike tea. She never give me lassi. She never use lassi. She always offer me tea. If I take given food, it is OK but if I express my desire / need, I am fired. She give food of choice to children, guest etc. but does not give same right to me. Husband have no right to express in front of wives. Wives want everything of personal choice from tailor etc. They shout on tailor if suit is not as per desire. They never give food of desire to husband.
