Hey I own a mac G5 as far as office everything will be ok... now you may find that the messengers are bit different from the PC versions... and you may not be able to get a couple games... but Ill tell you once you get use to the OS... men next time you go to a PC you will wander how the heck did you manage to work on those toasters, you will feel the leap as far as processing, info and large files... its just amazing... and look, in any case you can always run virtual PC, which it will allow you to basically run any PC format software on your mac... so enjoy the apple of temptation

Traditionally Macs have been able to open Word docs if you have MS Office for Mac - having said that, I'm not sure what the support is yet like for the new Office 2007 formats.

If you are a long-time PC user, one of the biggest frustrations you are set to find is the lack of configurability of a Mac. I can merrily use both (as a graphics and digital arts teacher I need to), but Macs are much more difficult to set-up just the way you want them. The Apple/Steve Jobs philosophy seems to be that everything is perfect just the way it is, so why would anyone WANT to reconfigure it?

Personally, if you are looking to update, and you are well familiar with PCs, I think you would be far better off upgrading your PC and going to Vista. Have been using since the early builds (am now using Vista RC1), and can't say that I would choose a Mac over a Vista based PC any time soon!

Pros:
-Stability (Macs don't crash, windows machines do, you also don't get regular annoying error messages and so forth)
-Security (no one writes mac viruses)
-Style (things look pretty)

Cons:
-Unfamiliar user interface (command + click =your new right click, odd when not used to it and a waste of a finger on your only keyboard wielding hand in my eyes)
-Cost (with a Mac you have to pay for that damn "quality" thing...)
-Hardware compatibility (it's easy to get extra PC stuff people have lying around or in garage sales, etc, lots of hardware is plug and play on a windows machine, etc. On a Mac, you basicly are only outfitted to use specific mac hardware, as that is all it has drivers written for.)
-Software incompatibility (While you can dual boot on a Mac fairly easily now, so still use windows on it, you'd have to pay for the windows instalation, not cheap) alternatively you could use an "emulator" like VMware, also not cheap and you still have to buy windows. But unless you can also use windows on your mac, most of your applications won't work for it, except a select few (of which office, which includes powerpoint and word, happens to be a member) unless of course you happen to be an artist, in which case you have photoshop, maya, etc. ports for the mac that are easy to take back and forth to PCs. Don't even think about playing games on the thing.... )

Basicly, a mac's high point is style, things look and feel "cool" that wouldn't on a windows machine, it comes pre-loaded with a bunch of mac software that's nifty and useful in a different way than PC software.... I'd recommend at least using one to see exactly what "style" entails before thinking about purchasing.

Yes, you can purchase microsoft office 2004 for mac that interprets all of your office documents (word, powerpoint, excel, etc) perfectly.

Pros: Better performance, almost no viruses, strong graphical capabilities, loads of software that enable you to be more digitally creative, and more.

Cons: They cost more than PCs do, but for what you get, it's well worth it in my mind.

You're lucky you can afford a mac, I sadly cannot. And to all of the people that say mac is crappy: you are simply insane. Also, if you're a gamer, you can install a copy of windows onto your mac, and use it when needed for running your games. Read more about that at http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

Your MS office files will work on a Mac, that is, provided your Mac has the application MS Office.

There are less softwares for Mac than Windows, if you're a gamer, Mac won't suit you. If you're doing more of visual, video and audio editing, a Mac will be better.

Mac isn't crappy.

If you must get a Mac/Apple then be sure to get Apple's Boot Camp with it. That way you can use programs on your Mac that would otherwise only run on Windows....

My bf has a mac and I still can't use it properly. You'll find it frustrating as all hell, but it's really good for specific programs like music and music recording.
