I've been working as a Mainframe Shift Analyst Third Shift for the last 7 years, basically fixing mainframe problems or helping others.

The only reason I'm keep doing this job is the salary above 70k, but I'm feeling this job is taking a hit on me, physically, mentally, profesionally and mentally.

Maybe I want to spend more time with my family, but with a less salary, a lot of thing are going to change, If I can't get a job with the same salary.

My skills are almost the same, my fault I know, but right now I'm feeling like I have to do something about it.

Any advise of what to do or how to approach this situation.

thanks

Take a holiday. You have an opportunity that is too good to throw away. Spoil yourself or do something to spend more time with your family. Maybe a chat to a psychologist to get some skills in dealing with your conflict and situation might help. At 70k I would try anything first. Good luck.

A bird in hand is better than a bird in the bush. So dont let go of your current job just yet.

But, If I were you, Id start scouring around for other jobs already. putting resumes into promising leads, and networking with old friends, colleagues and previous high school or college friends if they are still around.

Money might not be your top priority now. It is not fun to miss out on the important parts of your life, such as watching your children grow, bringing your son to football practice, camping, going to the beach. You are completely on the ball in getting that niggly feeling that maybe you are missing on the really big issues.

If you can find a job in a smaller town, with weekends off , take it. You might take a pay cut, but it has to pay a mortgage, and sustain a lifestyle of sorts. WHile you are working there, take classes pursuant to another certification, another skillset and work it so that your employer will subsidize a portion of it for you..

Remain on good terms with your company now. Do not burn bridges. Talk it out with your spouse, maybe get the spouse to do a part time job too so you can get time with the kids. It will be good for your spouse to keep a job and the money will also be better.

Good Luck God Bless, and remember that decisions made out of love usually come out to be the best ones you have ever made.

Hmm to be honest with you many will say sure keep the job for the money some will say take a vacation....to tell you the truth no matter how much you have to sacrifice you should do it for your family. The biggest change isnt you but your family....your spouse should be willing to help with that change and making the change easier for you. Man 70k is alot of money but also that kind of money has you living a certain way maybe its time for a change. If your health gets in the way because of your job what would your family do then when you are not there??? Think about it. Take care and god bless

Go the software design route. With your experience, you can start making software that allows companies to maintain their mainframes by themselves.

As a professional myself, there are always some things all clients do wrong or forget about doing that cause most problems...you know about best practicies for maintaing mainframes, and now you can make software that helps them do it themselves as your own venture...and you can do this while doing your current job.

Other way is to talk to mgmt for change in department...rotating once every 2/3 years helps now and then.
