Currently the top players are very tight, Henin, Sharapova, Clijsters and Mauresmo all seem to be even in terms of titles and win-loss ratio. However - Sharapova seems a little bit better at the moment, with a 19 match win streak at the end of last season, and a second grand slam title. These four women usually meet each other in the semi-finals and finals and their matches provide fabulous tennis.
The all time greats are definitly Graf, Navratilova, Evert and Court. No doubt that Margaret Smith court, who dominated at the end of the golden and the beginnig af the open eras, winning a record 24 grand slam titles, was a champion at a very different time, when tennis was very dissimilar to what it is these days. Graf might have been the most successful singles players but she wasnt as brilliant in doubles, unlike Navratilova, who at a certain point dominated boh the singles ranking and the doubles ranking for a very long time. Chris evert was also a fenomenal player, and a long-lasting one too, winning 18 grand slam title and finishing as the finalist at another 10. Suzzane Lenglen, and Billie Jean King were also dominant players who helped change female tennis and turn it into what it is thee days.
Currently, the best player is hard to determine, and from a very subjective point of view I'd have to say - Sharapova, because I am simply inlove with her...
The all time great is very hard to determine, but in singles play it has to be graf, and in singles, doubles and mixed doubles combined - there is no doubt that navratilova simply rises above the rest.

I know I am biased and that the "popular" pick is Steffi Graf, but I will always choose Monica Seles as best player ever. If she hadn't been stabbed by that piece of slime in Germany, I very highly doubt Graf would have ended up with 21 Slams. Monica was on her way to becoming the best player ever in women's tennis.

Currently, Kim Clijsters is the best female tennis player according to me. My all time favourite is Steffi Graf.

The reasoning behind the prize money differences at tournaments is due to the following: 1. Men play more sets than women, and therefore work harder and longer than the women do. The minimum number of sets a man needs to win to win wimbledon is 21, while a woman can win the tournament in just 14 sets. 2. Tickets to men's matches sell more quickly and in greater volume than for women's matches. Men draw bigger crowds. 3. Television and media coverage of tennis events is still focussed mainly on the men. The men therefore generate more revenue for the media. 4. Men are worth much more to advertisers than women, because they are on our tv more. This makes them a more expensive commodity than the women. I'm sure most of us would agree that women's tennis should get equal coverage in the media and that as athletes they are just as worthy as the men, however you can't really argue with the fact that the men have to play more sets than the women.

currently maria sharapova.....she would ascend the top spot as early as next week.....world number one playe h.hardene is out because of injury
all time is steffi graf no question about it......she won 22 major and got an amazing 900-115 (89%) win-loss record and $20 million in earnings (still the no.1). while navratilova got only 18 slam trophy and 1442-219 (87%) record.

Currently I would say at present Kim Clijsters or Henin look really good. But on the whole I guess Maria Sharapova is the most consistent.
