Hi. I'm in my 1st semester of college and I have NOOOOO idea what to major in. I have a strong interest in astronomy but I suck at math. My family keeps telling me that I'm great at art, and I'll admit, nothing feels so natural to me as making art. It feels great to create something.

My question is: Does anyone know a website that has either a quiz to determine what major you should take, or one that has a list of majors WITH a description? I know it's a lot, but I'm drowning in my own confusion. help.....

Your college has tests that can analyze the professions that you would fit. As far as your desire, talk to the college math instructors and tell them your desire. They should be able to tell you if there are ways for you to learn the math. Many do not know what they want to be until three years after they graduate college. Do not be hard on yourself and ignore others opinion.

I dont think a website is what you need. Take a few courses in art, you can always use those as a minor, but speak with an advisor first. You can plenty with that degree from teaching art to being a art curator, or art historian. Dont feel pressured to decide right now. After you have completed two full semesters rethink this whole majors thing. A summer internship involving art may also be helpful..see if you enjoy the work.

Good Luck.

From personal experience, quizzes and tests that try to determine "what you are" are only for fun. They can never be truly taken seriously, since the true answer is mostly psychological, and depends on every person. If you feel that art comes natural too you, then take art as your major. However, if you truly love astronomy, then you could take it as a minor, since you are not strong in math. Or, you could spend some extra work and get a double major.

Don't worry so much about what people say about your college major. For many jobs, it isn't so much what degree you have, but that you have one! The job outlook is not so good in many fields and, really, I think a big part of that is location. There are always jobs -- but a lot of it depends on experience, educational history, personality, and sometimes just plain luck. If you are interested in Sociology then by all means go for it! Changing majors to something that is supposed to make more money might leave you in a miserable job that makes getting up and heading to work pure drudgery. Don't worry about the money part of it -- that can still happen. Instead, see what else you can do to stand out to your future employers. Have you considered study abroad or interning? There's plenty that you can do to put yourself in the best light in the future -- just make sure it's the future that you want and care about. P.S. I studied theater to start with but realized that I really cared more about improv than traditional theater. I switched my major to English/Journalism.

Well, here is a link to a page that will help you explore possible career interests based on your responses to a quiz... It is kinda fun, and the students I have used this with have found it very helpful! http://career.missouri.edu/students/explore/thecareerinterestsgame.php

Also, if you are thinking about a specific major, here is a website that tells you what kinds of careers you can pursue with specific majors:
http://www.uncwil.edu/stuaff/career/Majors/

Hope these help - I used them many times with the students I advised in the Advising Center...

Good Luck! =)

Well I say do whatever you have more fun doing. I'm in my secong semester and i was trying to decide between History and Music and i went with music ed. because i've always wanted to teach music. I like history but i would never want to teach it. Go to a University website and look at all their majors it should have descriptions.

go to the career center at your school, they usually have quizzes and stuff to help you pick a major. my school even has a ton of books about each major, different careers, and other stuff useful for picking a major. so, i suggest your school's career center
