1. Use word roots and word parts to help you understand the vocabulary. For example: photo means light; synthesis means putting together ... so photosynthesis is putting together molecules of glucose using light. Now you can learn the term chemosynthesis pretty easily. Chemo means chemicals; synthesis means putting together ... so chemosynthesis is putting together molecules of glucose using energy from chemical molecules.

2. Use memory tricks that are visual or that help you with sounds. For example: in DNA the bases match up Adenine with Thymine (both start with "straight letters" or letters you can make with straight lines) and match Guanine with Cytosine (both start with "round letters").

3. Make up songs or rhymes. For example: Sing to the tune of Yankee Doodle: "Genes are recipes for proteins, found in DNA. Enzymes open up the base pairs; bring in RNA. RNA transcribes the gene; goes out of the nucleus; finds a ribosome and protein synthesis gets serious. second verse .... mRNA has the codons, each made of three bases. tRNA's anticodons try to match these places. tRNA brings amino acids to the scene. Amino acids make a chain that folds into a protein."

4. Have fun with the words and ideas. Pronounce the terms with a goofy accent or exaggerate the syllables. Say them out loud. Write them out. The more ways you say or write them, the more likely you are to remember them.

5. Study a little bit every day, even if you don't have an assignment. Go back over your notes every day, as soon after class as possible for the greatest effect on your memory.
