Oh please... do you do this the second you see someone with their elbows on the counter or do you frequent businesses to watch for habitual slackers? I'm not one to like to have to work 2x as hard to make up for someone else, but you sound like your panties are a little to tight.

Young, old or middle aged ... it's the work ethic that counts!
I've seen youngsters bust their butts for minimum wage, and "old timers" slack off for a "king's ransom"!
I'm "middle aged" (40 years plus). I reckon I've seen enough to say, it ain't the age, it's the ETHICS!
An "ethical worker" will give 100% effort (even when the boss ain't watching!)
Ethical workers come in all shapes, sizes, colors and ages! A sixteen year old just entering the workforce might just be a harder worker than a fifty year old worker!
I try to give 100% effort in every situation (middle aged (40+ year old) just starting a second career!) every day. I've seen a lot, from the new worker "smacked down" to an appropriate level of production (Hey I've been there, don't mess with the system! Do only as much as we do, otherwise "the man" will expect more) To the "old timer" who expects the "younger crowd" to work as long and hard as they did (back in the old days ... we usta produce more, with less)!
The answer might just be somewhere in the middle ground! Keep your "customers" as well supplied as you can, produce a good product for them (give your job the best effort you can), and expect that no matter what do ... some people will still complain about your "lack of customer service".
Can anyone give more than 100%? If you are doing your best, that's GREAT! If you are not giving your best .... WHY?

I've seen people of all ages not dong their job. It's got nothing to do with their age. It could be that they're being asked to do too much. It could be that you have seen them on their break or a lull between tasks.
Nowadays money is getting so tight that some employers are being forced to keep fewer staff but still need them to do the same amount of work as when there were more people to do it.
You don't give a good impression of yourself saying that you get people sacked even though I'm sure it would take more than your word for an employer to sack someone.

I have seen young people not doing their jobs, but I have also BEEN a young person not doing my job. So no, I don't want to have them fired - I figure if they don't do their jobs for long enough, that'll take care of itself.

Have you ever seen middle aged people not doing their job because I have, so do you have them fired to?
Have you ever seen young people DOING their job, I have, i was one of them.
Nice generalization (not)

Sure. Though i am not sure why you would limit to just young people. The same line of reason would apply to a worker of any age.

So you think getting them fired is the best solution you have?
Never occurred to you that you can mentor them & help them do their job better???

I see it all the time, but I have better things to do than try to get them fired.
