Stop supplying free answers to your boss. Now the Big boss would start wondering why there is a famine of ideas. At that point, you can feed the solutions directly to the Big Boss. Having let him know who is the source of the ideas, go back to feeding the immediate Boss. No matter how much your Big Boss is impressed with you there is no way you can bypass the heirarchy and have continuous direct access to him. And there will always be a few things you are yet to learn, which only the direct boss can teach you. During your early years in a career ,don't bother much about who is capitalising on your knowledge, but be keen to learn as much as possible of what you do not know. This is a better strategy than insisting on due credit for your knowledge.

There was an article on this topic in a business magazine a few months ago. I don't remember which one, but let me see if I can remember the recommendations.

First, it should be a last resort to go directly to your boss's boss. And sometimes, there are opportunities to further your career in case your boss wants to take credit for something that you did or an idea you had. If you let him have a few, then he may just drag you along as he climbs the corporate ladder because you make him look good. But if it consistent and you are not reaping the rewards in terms of salary and promotions, you should take action.

The first, but not always the best option is to approach your boss, behind closed doors, and check whether he is aware that your ego was busted because you did not get credit for an idea that you thought was a good one. Ask what you can do in the future to make sure you get the proper credit for the idea.

If you are not comfortable talking to him directly, then you have to take a little more subtle route. First, let your close cohorts know about your idea, preferably in a meeting where the boss is also present. If he steals your idea now, some other folks will know and he should (but may not) feel like a heel. If that doesn't work, keep the ideas close to the vest until you are in a meeting with your boss and his boss and make the suggestions in a way that doesn't look like you are undercutting him - something like "you know what I was thinking recently, and I'm sorry boss that you and I didn't get a chance to talk about it yet, but I find it pertinent to todays conversation....I was thinking that we could....." That should keep the idea credit squarely in your court.

If all of that fails to drive the point home, go to the bigs, but be aware that they will talk to him about it at some point and he will look to take out his anger on you if they let him hang around, so again, use that as a last resort and really only if you think you can get him fired for it or yourself promoted to an equivalent position (you likely won't leapfrog him right away, but if you can get parallel, then you have the same audience that he does - just don't underestimate his jealousy and bitterness and ability to make you look bad to others if he wants).

That sucks. You dont want to seem like your complaining but you should get the credit you deserve. What I was told by someone very successfull was not complain or tell on someone, especially not your boss. A good thing to do might be to tell your boss's boss that your boss is so good at his job he should be promoted to another position or office. This will make you look good to your boss's boss, seeming like a teamplayer, and it might get your current boss out of your way so you could really shine.

Next time you give an idea to your boss, don't give it 100%. Leave some critical gap, which boss's boss can notice it. When he asks your boss and he in turn asks you give some irrelevant or wrong information. When your boss is caught on wrong foot he will,in all probability, name you. When you are facing boss's boss then give the right solution. Do it carefully, it may misfire.

First of don’t express your idea’s so openly to anyone. From now on when you have an idea research it and know it four ways from Sunday… as the saying goes. Then express your idea to the guy who steals your ideas in front of his boss, and everyone else. When he tries to jump in for credit be quiet and wait until he gets stuck, because he will not know what your idea in detail. Hence you will have to explain it thoroughly and thus making it clear to everyone who is really behind the good ideas in your work place. You!

Same thing happened to me. I believe in karma. What goes around comes around. Don't say anything to the big boss. Don't say anything to your boss. You will get the opportunity one day.

Start going straight to your bosses boss with YOUR ideas and preachin them to her/him instead of going directly to your boss.. .once he/she gets the idea that you are the brains, he/she will start to catch on. Good luck, we've all been there.

You are in a dog-eat-dog world. Are you willing to risk your job to do the right thing?

Often, I have come to a similar situation and found that by complaining to the top dog never helped as more than often, they don't want to hear it nor will they do anything about it.

You are the apple in this case, whether you fall on the knife or the knife falls on you... there is only one who will be cut.
