The best laptop is one that does what you want for the lowest price.
Do you want it to do word processing? Spreadsheet? Games? Myspace? Chat? IM?
Define your use first, then get the cheapest unit that will do all that. Don't buy features you don't need just for the heck of it, or just to feel you've got the "latest & greatest"
When, eventually, it comes time to sell, you'll lose more than if you bought a cheaper unit.
Having said all that, choose a good, reliable brand name. I believe that SONY and TOSHIBA laptops are best in breed. DELL would follow closely. I tend to avoid the others.

Toshiba and HP have been decent laptops these days. Avoid Dell, eMachine, Sony, Gateway and particulary the lowest-priced laptops that you would find in Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc. I've dealt with these problem laptops more often than Toshiba or HP.

Ask the computer shop for cheap Sempron or Celeron laptop.
Pretty much as long as the laptop has "DDR2" memory (NOTE THIS DOWN NOT "DDR1" BUT "DDR2") it should handle all of your student tasks fine.
