We don't. It's a myth based on the past, when people couldn't read or write, there wasn't many books or internet and information wasn't as available as it is now. At that time only a select few had access to limited information and they were the teachers, so you had to go to school to hear what they have to say as it was the only way to learn and find a job.

Honestly, you don't have to go to college to be a success...look at Bill Gates! He is like a gazillionaire and never finished high school. But, let's be realistic! Coming from my background, it is best to go to college. No one can ever take your education away from you, and the college degree you earn could take you anywhere. Things happen to people when they least expect it.
I was dislocated from Mississippi by Katrina, but I was determined to finish my teaching degree. I ended up doing my student teaching in a different state even though I lost everything I owned, and I still managed to complete the degree requirements. I may not have that multi-millionaire type job, but I still have a career in case something were to happen to my husband, AND it is something I love to do. Let's face it, hun...parents and spouses do not live forever, and sometimes the only way to have a promising future is to have a degree that says, "Hey, I am smart and qualified." It is not always easy trying to find a job without the college degree.
Take advantage of that college education...it could be your ticket to great success!

There are many self-taught scholars. People who want to learn will do better than those who are there for the grade.
However, in large institutions, the degree is required as an entry to mid level jobs, unless you can prove yourself somehow. But you may not be able to get people to listen without one. You will meet engineers who cannot write a simple sentence, managers who can't do a simple math problem. It's not logical, but it's the system.
