If you discover new techniques you could incorparate into your own style, I think, It's worth studing and creating if it helps you.

Most art is a form of mental health for Artists. It gets ideas & thoughts out their minds and into physical forms, such as, paintings, sculture, music,...so on. By bringing ideas & thoughts into the physical realm, its easer to deal with them and express what you mean.

I can't tell you how many times and ways I've seen and heard this type of question, but I appreciate that it is better formed than the others. In general I find the premise of similar questions disturbing, so here is my response.

Ask yourself this. How would you like to study history and have nearly a century of it missing from the story? It would be simply ridiculous. The answer is yes, modern art is worth our time. It spans nearly a century and we should not dismiss it based on taste.

Many people shrug off an entire section of history because they don't feel aesthetically moved by a Picasso or Pollack. I find this pretty ignorant and unsettling considering these works are there to reflect an important part of culture. Even if you don't like these particular artists there are hundreds of notable artists in the modern period that should not be discounted based on misconception and distaste.

Also, the modern period is too often confused with contemporary art which is still equally important. Regardless of how pretentious or useless the perception of it is, it does not define the true value of it. At best it reveals the values of those perceiving it, but history will show this in time as it always has.

If people would merely study art history a little better, they would find that a great deal of modern art reflects important reactions to oppressive traditions and human issues - social, political, etc.
