I have lived in both places. CA, especially the Bay Area, is very expensive. Everything is sky high. Phoenix has some nice areas and I really like it. Yes, the summers are hot (dry heat but that doesn't mean anything at 118 degrees). Traffic in the Bay Area is awful. It's not quite as bad here but it's getting there. We don't have earthquakes here which is another good point. I left San Jose shortly after the 89 quake.

San Jose. I cannot handle the 110 plus degree temps in the summer in arizona. May through end of septemer averages in Phoenix are 95 or higher. That is just way too hot for me. I need some what of a season change. San Jose average high is only 84.
If you pick AZ you would be trading one extreme for another. Cold to Hot.
I am a native on the SF area and I just live living in the Bay Area. Though I do prefer Napa and Sonoma counties to the south bay if I had to pick.

I'd opt for Phoenix. San Jose is up close to San Francisco. It might not get as cold there but because of the moisture you feel it more. Been in all three places, Chicago, Phoenix, and San Jose. Believe me trading Chicago for San Jose is a bad trade.
It is warmer and dries in Phoenix in the first place. You can at least get away out into the boondocks in Phoenix without having to drive all day. It doesn't cost as much to live in Phoenix. and there are a lot of jobs out in Phoenix. Just to name a few.

I would choose Phoenix, AZ. Summers do get very hot, but the low humitidy makes the temps talorable. August is the only month that may be annoying since monsoon is at its peak. Winter months are amazing in the Phoenix area. Temperatures can go from the 50's to 70's. Lows shouldn't be a threat for you since your from Chicago. Rainfall is much less than Chicago. However, monsoon starts in July and rain can fall pretty hard. Thunder is common during the summer storms. Dust storms do occasionally happen, but nothing too sever. Once in a while you may have high winds up to 20-30 mph. But they are mostly light all year around. Say goodbye to snow. Phoenix has only recorded snow several times in the past century. You can sometimes see snow in the distance mountain ranges which is a great scenery when you're driving. Overall, Phoenix has its up and downs (but hey, all cities aren't perfect). Like i said, I would go for phoenix.

San Jose, Ca is better than Phoenix, AZ. If you are used to Chicago weather, moving to Arizona would be the opposite. Besides, Arizona is too hot and it's in a desert. A better place to live in would be in the Mountain View or Sunnyvale area next to San Jose because there's less traffic in that area and you are close to nice reasonable shops and restaurants.

It really all depends on whether you have a "marketable" profession. High tech is in incredible demand in San Jose, heart of Silicon Valley. But even if you just have a "regular" job you'll make more in San Jose; even lower level managers (like me) make 6 figures.
The real question is: do insane property values bother you?
The weather in San Jose is very temperate; it's only 40 miles south of San Francisco, but it's an entirely different micro-climate. It's usually pretty mild in the winter and warm and comfortable in the summer. Phoenix can be brutal in the summer.
In short - take San Jose if you can afford it. Otherwise, make your home in Phoenix and "Go D-Backs!"

Yeah, tell me about it....I feel your freezing pain, lol. I'm living in south Chicagoland for 10 years now, after having moved from Phoenix. I love PHoenix, and I would recommend it but you probably want to have a car with a/c and an apartment with a/c and if possible, a job with a/c. It gets really hot in the summertime, but in my experience, I am going to move back when my kids are older as I hate freezing here. I don't know about San Jose....but Phoenix rocks.

I think probably Phoenix due to extremely high housing costs and overcrowding in San Jose. Sharks are pretty good hockey team though which matters alot.
