If you have a Mac, use iMovie. If you have Windows XP, use Windows Movie Maker 2. iMovie comes on every Mac (for the past couple years). Windows Movie Maker comes on most PC's. If you don't have it, you can download it for free.

There are lota editing softwares which are amateur friendly. I would suggest adobe premiere or Incite. You just need to digitize the tape you shot by connecting the av cod to your comp. save the movie. open it incite or adobe. switch to the tv mode and start playing the file. when you find the scenes you need, just press the Q key. the chosen shots will be selected. when you wanna stop selecting press the W key. save the chosen clips as a new file.

Yeah, you can use Paint shop pro which has a screen capture tool. Very simple to use and then you can save it as a jpeg. another way used to be using Cyberlink DVD program which you can download from the net. But I haven't used it in awhile so I don't know if the their updated version has this screen capture capability still. It's very simple to use as well if it still applies.
