What is the best way to write notes for history?

I have been taking notes several different ways and none of the seem to work. I am trying to find a new way. My teacher always reccommends this one way but it sucks and doesn't work. Anyone have a way that works well for them?

take notes on keywords and ask ur teacher to repeat them twice.
try focusing on just keypoints, instead of trying to write everything!

For History try this format:

Year, event, location, misc notes, ref page #

so your notes will looks something like this:

1492, Columbus comes to Amreicas. Islands, blah blah blah, pg. 234
