I just bought a viewsonic lcd, which I chose because it is a good brand, and when the screen is supposed to be black it just seems dark grey. I don't notice it unless there is a large black area on screen. Otherwise it has good color and sharpness. turning the brightness and contrast down doesn't create a true black.

I miss the true black of my crt, but the lcd is sexy and it creates a lot of space on my desk.

So is there a way to get true black, or are all LCDs like that?

Cannot get it, LCD's have a backlight which makes them very bright by nature, then you have backlight bleeding and LCD just can't produce a true black like a CRT.

That is why I still have my Diamond Pro 930sb CRT.

That is the disadvantage of LCD and many alternate display technologies is that they do not produce the true black that you get from CRT's. Actually, CRT's produce better colors than LCD. But, LCD's deliver a brighter and sharper image than CRT.

While you can tweak the brightness, contrast and color temperature, you are never going to get true black. Also, the black reproduction is dependent on your contrast ratio. The highest the contrast ratio, the darker the blacks will be.

1000:1 contrast ratio would have better blacks than 500:1. You will notice the more you spend on the LCD monitor, the higher the NITS and contrast ratio.

I would never have an LCD monitor--it's CRT all the
way for me! Why? When I look at an LCD screen
all I see is silver. When anything is on the screen it
looks like a transparent photo laid on a silvescreen.
Also, you must look straight on. Also, you never get the bright color as on CRT. There have been many problems with LCDs. But PCWorld says there's a new LCD that is back-lit and is much better--altho you had better have big bucks to get one.

This is called light leakage. While having a true black screen (during viewing of a DVD for example), the black areas appear greyish. This is because of the backlighting of the LCD.

Some LCDs are high quality and show almost pure black, and this is not noticeable. From my experience, and seeing hundreds of LCDs, most have some degree of light leakage.

It's might not be your viewsonic monitor, it could be your video card doing that dark grey instead of black. If you're using Windows XP, just go to the Display control panel, click on the Settings tab, then go to "Advanced", from there is your video card software tab (Nvidia, Intel, ATI or whatever card you're using) which you can look around and possibly tweak the settings to get your true black on your Viewsonic.

Hmmm, apart from the fact that Viewsonic is not actually all that wonderful a brand, you may simply need to adjust your brightness and contrast settings - should have control buttons on the monitor itself to do this

Well unless you have a graphics card on your computer, it might not be possible thru the computer...

Many Graphic Cards come with some type of Color Correction software....

Or you can calibrate your monitor
