I'm a current recording artist too, and I say...
head to the ungodly world of Myspace.
Then once you have a MySpace for your recordings [Under music section] you will become seemingly legit and can start playing shows [try local places and open-mics first].
Good luck!

Well, here's a good place if u get answers to this thing.
Another idea would be to go to www.myspace.com and set up an account for either yourself personally, or for your music. If a bird can have it's own myspace, so can your music. Besides, there are a lot of famous groups and bands on there with their own sites, be 'friend' them and go for it...

Make a music video (if you haven't already) and post on Youtube. It definitely gets alot of exposure, I have seen many music videos on there by people just like you.
Good Luck!

myspace is good because people can go randomly and listen to ur song, but i have my songs on this sites:
musicfreedom.com
idolunderground.com
but idolunderground.com, in order to put ur music on the radio, u have to pay $25 per song. but it's so worth it because u get to win prizes. i have won prizes and still waiting for some that ends in april where my songs are in the lead.
mine is idolunderground.com/cman
