If you are asking this question, I am sure you are already a graphic designer. With the web so open now and advertising taking on a new dynamic such as sites like you tube and myspace you really can just keep your eyes open for the right opportunity. Take for example the Silent Hill poster contest that was held last year. Many movie studios are now moving to getting user/viewers involved in their marketing.
I would definitely get on movie studio email lists if I was you and be aware of the possibilities coming up. A site I use to see what movies are in the pipeline aside from IMDB is HSX.com It's the Hollywood stock exchange. Movies are listed in early pre-production and even in conceptual stages. You could put together a portfolio of designs based on that and shop them around as examples of your work. I would definitely get out to LA and start schmoozing, because that will also help.
There are so many possibilities to getting your vision seen and your only hindrance is your desire. You are what you desire.

a design degree is a must if you want to go directly into that-you can get on with a movie studio in the Art department, or even better, sign on with a production company and they will contract you out, allowing you more varied assignments. As I said, most of these companies are looking for college grads, and a little experience in the design world is a definite plus too. Just taking a few courses won't do it, as they would basically be trusting that you were telling the truth about your experience, and no business would do that. On top of a degree, a full portfolio is a MUST, as that shows what kind of competent professional you are.

Take some graphic design courses, maybe some photography as well. Apply at your local film union for a position in the Art Department. You'll probably start out doing something basic like set painting or props but they'll be able to direct you better there.

You might look into graphic arts positions with either studios or advertising firms that handle film studios.
