problem:12meters cubed = x centimeters cubed

12 m³ x (100 cm/1 m) x (100 cm/1 m) x (100 cm/1 m) = 12,000,000 cm³ = 1.2 x 10^7 cm³

Notice how the units cancel and you end up with the units you want.

You have a slight semantic problem.
There is a difference between 12 meters cubed and 12 cubic meters.
12 meters cubed = 1,200 centimeters cubed.

1 m=100cm so 1m^3=100^3 cm^3=1,000,000 cm^3
12m^3=12,000,000 cm^3

12 meter cube..............mean
= (12 *100)*(12*100)*(12*100)
= 12000*12000*12000
= 1728000000000 cm
