As of Nov 2006, there were 12440. This should include the stores which are within other stores (like book stores), but may not include locations where they serve Starbucks coffee but are not owned by Starbucks (such as hotels and corporate offices). My office has one, and I have visited many hotels which sell it (even the baristas wear the Starbucks aprons), but I don't think either count as a location.

From Wikipedia:
"According to the company fact sheet, as of November 2006, Starbucks had 7,102 company-operated outlets worldwide: 5,668 of them in the United States and 1,434 in other countries and U.S. territories. In addition, the company has 5,338 joint-venture and licensed outlets, 3,168 of them in the United States and 2,170 in other countries and U.S. territories. This brings the total locations (as of November, 2006) to 12,440 worldwide."

That's a good question. I have a starbucks inside my building where I work and a group of us go to it practically every day. It has really helped us bond as a team. So I imagine this is happening in other starbucks around the world as well.

They were the global retailer of 2007 and rightfully so, with more than 12,000 global locations.
