Can browse web sites, but canot log on to yahoo messenger, msn or download updates for anti virus. I do not have any firewall on. It is not the dsl modem or router as i have another computer connected and it works just fine. Does anyone know if there is a configuration in windows that may be causing this. I am running Windows XP Pro which was an upgraded version to Home. prior to this upgrade, things worked just fine. This may just be a coincidence. Another possibility, my sound card in the mother board is not working. I am using a usb sound card to work around this. Not sure if this is a possibility. I have had a few times lately, my computer has shut down and the message was that this was a thermal event. So perhaps someting bad is going on under the hood. Anyway, does anyone have any idea or experience to share. Thanks

Try looking in control panel for the windows firewall and disabling it, or better yet (if you know how) enable access to the programs you need to get to the net.

As for your soundcard and MB, it sounds like you have a dell/gateway/hp/big name pc. Normally just upgrading these to pro does not work. You have to then go to the manufactures website and re download the drivers ( or in the case of Gateway, just give up because their drivers won't work ever)

You need to look at picking up a router. This will allow you to share a single modem between multiple computers. The only issue that I see for you is buying one that supports enough connections. A typical router supports 4 wired ports and optionally numerous wireless connections. Your laptop shouldn't be an issue with a wireless connection but most desktops are built with only a wired network port. You could add a PCI wireless adapter to one or more desktops and ensure that you pick up a wireless router. ** Edit ** You do not need to purchase the same brand of wireless adapters as the wireless router. I have two brands between 3 desktop computers and a laptop that uses a built in wireless adapter. All can connect without a problem.

If it's saying a thermo event maybe your computer is overheating. Is it making any unusual noise? My computer at work did this once and I lost a lot of data. It was awful and all that happened was the fan was no longer working as it should ( it hadn't stopped completely yet) but was pretty noisy. hope this helps . Good luck!!
