I know some communities around the country are certainly tolerant, while others are definitly not. Just wondering what you all have experienced lately.

I would say that I am fortunate to never have had any experience w/homophobia. I work for a police department and everyone knows. Do they talk to other officers behind my back, perhaps. When everyone talks to me though they are sincere and friendly. Maybe I am just lucky, or it could be that they see me (the person) before anything else because of the way I act and carry myself.

I'm lucky enough to live in a part of the country that is considered to be very tolerant... I've experienced some trouble when I was in high school, but since then nobody has ever been overtly homophobic towards me. At the same time, I think a lot of people (regardless of whether they mean to or not) react to gay people in specific ways because of internalized homophobia.

People don't have any problems at my school, UNTIL they're visibly identifyable as some kind of queer. I was president of pride, but still didn't have any problems until I was walking around with a boyfriend. I have a trans friend who doesn't pass, and she gets crap ALL THE TIME. She's visibly "different". The best part is that everyone loves to talk about how liberal the campus is; it's not exactly conservative, but it's not nearly as liberal as people would like to think.

Where I work now, me personally? No. It's rampant in that workplace though. People don't outrightly go up to a fellow worker and talk mean to him or her, but gay-bashing jokes, inuendos, and even a sort of anti-gay intellectualism is present at times that I think is part of homophobia. Do co-workers say these things around gay men and women who are out -- to their faces? No. But it is said at break times during discussions or chatting during work. Most of the time the gay and lesbian bashing is done by men, in a joking manner.

Here in Chile people are mostly homophobes (mostly Catholics), so you can imagine how the situation is.

A few weeks ago me and my friends went to put up some signs to promote a GTLB film cycle. While we were doing it a few guys approached us and started to rip off the signs and yelling at us and pushing us, this was in the middle of the day and no one did anything!
They just stared.

There have also been a lot of attacks and killings, specially to transsexuals, by Neo-Nazis groups...

First let me say, I'm not out to the general public. Having said this, I've had some people comment on my behavior and what not. The worst thing was when my old boss asked me if a fellow coworker was gay. He wasn't, but I know he would have fired him if he had been. I no longer work there for obvious reasons.

I have been fired from several jobs for being transgendered. Seriously. And there is no legal recourse. It stinks. Ah well, I survive. :)
