I'm a lefty, and I know I was born a lefty. My second daughter was born a lefty also. Children have a preference from an early age. I have observed it in my own children. That being said, children can be taught to use one hand or the other. I went to Catholic school, and they tied my left hand to my chair so that I was forced to use the right. (The latin word for left is "sinister". Can't have that, can we?) Also, in the middle and far east, the left hand is considered unclean, and there are very few, if any, left handed people in places like Iraq, Iran, India, Pakistan. Because I was forced to use the right hand, I am now ambidextrous. I can write with both hands, at the same time, one forward and one backward, and upside down. But, I can only throw a ball and perform similar actions with my right hand, and I habitually only eat with my left.

Appearently they are born that way. 1 in 10 people or so... Even in cultures where the left hand is taboo, it still happens. Left-handed Muslims often eat with the right hand. 100 years ago in America, the left hand was thought to be a tool of the devil so left handed children were forced to learn to write right handed.

So appearently it is either something that can be partly un-taught, or a person can be ambidextrious, both right and left handed.

I am left handed and can tell you I feel pretty certain I was born this way. I am surprised at how many people act surprised when they find out I am left handed. Its like theres the shadow left over of the left-handed stigma. It kinda cracks me up. I heard an old myth that way back when, they thought left handed people to be mentally retarded...go figure.

but i have a story for you .
when i was young girl i was born left handed ,i went to a catholic school with nuns ,i guess they believed it was the devil's work being lefty ,they had to teach me to right right handed.
today I'm an adult and i see still tendencies of being a lefty ,so today i can use both right and left .

I could write with both hands growing up but later on it just became more comfortable to write with my left hand and now i'm left handed. Wierd huh? So I think it's natural.
