I have the latest iTunes version. When I go to the podcasts in iTunes Store, all the 'subscribe' and 'buy episode' buttons are greyed and I can't press them. I can't download a single podcast.
Why is this?

Do you have payment options set up? If not, then iTunes won't let you download any content, free or not. You can still subscribe to podcast services that are not managed through the iTunes store, though.

Some podcasts are free. Some not. When I first started to explore podcasts I went to the Itunes store and went through their various listings. In the descriptions it will tell you if it is free or not. Lots of the news oriented ones, as well as interest and hobby ones are free. When you push the subscribe button it will double check with you on your intent. Some are interview-like , most are informational, like listening to a radio show without commercials on your subject. There are all kinds.
