So, many good answers but I can only pick one, elaine, you're right, there should be more that one vegetarian option, I have put alot of thought into that as my daughter and her friends are vegetarians, Firefly, you were pretty indepth with your Ideas.
As for old school, I decided to name one of my sandwiches after you, I shall call it "The turkey jerk".

OHhhh...the creative wheels are turning over here!
Let's see, I would probably use lots of lighting...like, maybe even bold, bright colors, if there's not enough windows.
Good authentic music in the background.
Maybe check around the area to see what other shops are around that offer the same thing (sandwiches, etc). See how they have their shops set up.
Ask yourself, "How can I top this? What do THESE sandwich shops have that I don't? What do I see in these shops that appeal to the customer and how can I make my shop MORE presentable and cost-competitive?"
Don't be afraid to check out prices, sandwich layouts, shop 'styles' and atmosphere.
You want to be able to create an environment that appeals to both the 'younger generation' and the 'general public' with one glance. (That's why I suggest bright, bold colors). It makes the atmosphere 'fun' and 'inviting'.
I think keeping it contemporary and light will enhance the look and feel of the shop, too. Don't go 'old style', because that only works with the shops that have been around since the '60's or a bit later!!! HA HA!
Find new and creative ways to put together the most appetizing sandwiches and custom make your own menu's and flourish it with plants and modern ceiling light fixtures.
The possibilities are endless!! Use your imagination, and don't forget to 'research' and 'investigate' the other shops around you to get the best of what they have to offer and bring it up a notch or two, and make it stylish and welcoming!
I hope these helped you get the 'wheels' turning on your end!

:-)

Opening A Sandwich Shop

2016-11-07 09:45:04 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

I wouldn't open a Sandwich shop close to a high school if thats what your going to depend on for your main source of income.

The problem is that your going to get a big lunch crowd during the week, but those customers are not going to be there for 180 days out of the year, especially during the summer which should be your most busy part of the year.

The other thing to consider is that the kids are going to drive away families and adults.

From experence from a friend who had a pizzaria, your going to be super busy from around 11:30 AM till 12:30pm while the kids are off for lunch, and then you'll be semi busy around 3pm-4pm when the kids get off school.

The kids are eating at your store because of the convience that its close to school and they need to be back in class soon, the families and business people are not going to go to your shop because they will not wait in line. They will go somewhere else where there the line is not as bad away from the school.

The other issue is the loitering. I had a friend who used to own a 31 flavors ice cream shop back in the 1980's. Business was great until they opened up an arcade next door, the kids loitering around the ice cream store all afterooon and evening drove away all the families and he had to eventually had to close his shop.

I got another friend who just opened a Jewelery store next to a teenager coffee shop. He doesn't realize it, I can always hear the kids in th coffee shop next door and I think they drive away older customers.

Another thing to consider is if you do this by the high school, check and see if they have an open campus for lunch, and what kind of lunches they serve at the school. Believe me the kids do bad stuff during their lunch break and I have seen it happen in some schools where they changed the rules and have a closed campus lunch. Other schools now have Taco Bell and Mc Donalds inside the cafeteria, in an effort to try to keep the kids on Campus. A Sandwich shop can do very well with crappy cafeteria food, but not as well with Mc Donalds or Taco Bell.

If I was going to open a sandwich shop, I would try to open it near a hospital, in a shopping mall or by a professional building where your going to have a steady stream of customers all day long during the week and throughout the year!

There are several sandwich shops by my college, which is also by my high school in which I graduated from. Its also surrounded by many new small businesses. Most of the sandwich shops sold Subs. Jersey Mikes, Subway, Bagel Brothers, Brueggers Bagels, just to name a few. I would suggest opening something similar. And I would advise that you open up early. Maybe an hour before the High School nearby the shop begins school. You will pick up a lot of business then selling breakfast sandwhiches.
Sausage, Eggs, and Bacon sandwich... Mmmmm...

O! And try advertising in the High School Newspaper. Maybe a coupon. Or at least get your business known in the community.

Good Luck!!!

My favorite place to get sandwiches is in Brunswick Maine and is called Scarlet Begonia's. It is also near the campus of Bowdoin College, so might be a good parallel. A few of its highlights:
1) You walk in and are greeted by the aroma of garlic. It's instant love!
2) They always have soups. If you're in the deep south, this might not be such a good idea. Nice cream of mushroom, barley, all kinds of GREAT soups. This is faster to prepare and serve than a sandwich.
3) nice grilled sandwiches, like reubens, on quality bread
4) Salads for those who like to eat healthy
You order at the counter and then the food is delivered to your table. This is a nice way to do it because it saves half the walking-around time for the one waitress who works there. It's a good time-saver. Drinks are also self serve, from a cooler or the pitcher of water sitting on the counter - more time saved.

Reasonable pricing, comfortable seating, outdoor seating in good weather, decent music, not too loud for conversation, above all, polite staff.

If you can find a location near a school and a block or less from a hospital, you'll be RICH I TELLS YA! LOL

Being so close to a high school atmosphere will be important. High school kids mostly look for cheap food. A value menu is good for them but adults look for quality. If you try to find a middle ground between the two you could keep everyone happy.

variety is the spice of life. have lots of different ingredients and breads, rolls, wraps, pitas, etc. be sure to offer good lunch specials and advertise at the highschool. maybe offer a big sandwich eating challenge as an additional promotion.
