I'm going to be switching cell phone services soon and need advice. I have Verizon but plan on switching to Tmobile or Cingular. I was wondering if I bought an unlocked gsm phone, could I use it here in the US and then buy a prepaid sim card in italy and just switch cards?

Yes you can, just make sure that you get QUAD-BAND GSM Device if you are going with Cingular. If you choose T-Mobile Euro-Tri will do, juts make sure it has 900Mhz (For Italy) and 1900Mhz (For the US).
Here's quick reference for you, the GSM phones in the US operate on 1900Mhz and 850Mhz. In Europe they operate on 1800Mhz and 900Mhz, but mostly 900Mhz. Of course they have 3G as well.

I choose you had reported the type of cellular telephone, yet in all probability, it truly is going to artwork for calls and texts. you would possibly want to ought to confirm if the phone is unlocked for SIMs previously using it right here. you could attempt it by sticking a SIM card in and seeing if it quite works. the fellow who responded above me has no idea what they are talking about. Italy makes use of GSM frequencies of 900 and 1800 for voice and GPRS, and 2100 for 3G files. If the phone is a tri-band or quad-band "international" telephone, it truly is going to artwork with between the GSM agencies in the U. S., both T-cellular or AT&T. T-Mo makes use of UTMS 2100 band for 3G files. i'd opt for to appeal to close what type of telephone it truly is to be extra definitive.

as the person above says. The phone only needs to be unlocked if you plan to put an Italian SIM in the phone. With the US SIM it will work, but you pay roaming rates

Yep you can definatley do that! As long as the phone is unlocked, it can be used on any GSM provider, and that is all they use in Italy.
