Someone at my university used permanent marker on a whiteboard in a room where I frequently teach. I've heard that alcohol may remove the offending marker... Does anyone know if this well actually work without harming the white board?

Thanks!

yes, alcohol does work, also nail polish remover is extremely effective. I've also heard that hair spray works as well, although I havent tried that one out. But nail polish will be able to get the marker off.

I have done this to the whiteboard in my classroom, and I recommend baking soda on a moist cloth to remove the permanent marker. Wring out a wet towel and dab the towel into dry baking soda. Gently rub the baking soda onto the whiteboard to erase the marker. It's like magic. Rinse with a second damp towel and buff dry with a dry towel. Never a scratch.

I even did this to my brand new oak kitchen cabinets when my son got them with a Magic Marker. No damage and every bit of marker came off.

Trace the permanent mark with a dry erase marker then take a white board marker eraser and erase it.

Another thing that works is writing over the permanent marker with a dry-erase marker and then erasing immediately. That's what I usually use since I have them handy and it works.

Acetone (nail polish remover) works best. Also, a solution of bleach and water would do... but that might be too caustic.
