Similar to God hates the sin not the sinner. It is an excuse or a way of reasoning to condone any wrongdoing.

It's just an excuse for people to get away with doing things that are wrong. i.e. cheating. "Oh, don't hate the player, hate the game!" Uh, if you weren't a PLAYER, there would BE no game. It's a completely wrong ideal to hold to. Cheating is wrong, and if you cheat, you are wrong. Period. There's no "line" between what you do and who you are - you are defined by your actions.
