I am a junior in highschool. I wirte for my school's newspaper and i am planning on contiuning to do so for my senior year as well. I was just wondering how it would look on my application. I do several other extra curriclars in school as well as a sport. However what i am asking is that I am only staff photographer (by choice- i could have been an editor if i chose)...most probably next year i will move upto Photo Editor. Is it true that if i'm not Editor in Chief then colleges dont really care?

Also...what are the qualifications to join the newspaper staff of the University of Illinois- Chicago and Loyola University- Chicago? Do you have to have/be planning to have a journalism major because i want to do Pre-med and Bio major.

Only if you're going to school at "If You Weren't the Top Dog on Your High School Newspaper, You Obviously Have no Business Going to College At All University." Whoever is telling you that "it doesn't count" is trying to make you feel inferior and insecure.

You've got sports and journalism - you are demonstrating that you are a well rounded individual. It looks good.

I'm not all that familiar with the specific qualifications at the newspapers of those universities, but I'm familiar with university life. Schools of that size may have more than one way for you to contribute to the journalism of the community. You might serve as the newspaper's correspondent from the pre-med program. Or the Pre-med department might have its own internal publication for students and alumni.

You have the skills to document an event in language and images. That's a valuable skillset, not a liability, no matter what line of study that you choose.

I'm linking you to some major medical journals. Take a look at a few articles. What do you find there? Research? Yes, but also case studies form every day practice, well written and well documented with photos and diagrams. When you become the Head of the Neuro-Vascular-Nuclear Medicine division at Johns Hopkins, you'll be able to document your own research!

Best of luck to you. And quit listening to whoever is giving you this negative talk.

Individual categories best "appear well" on university packages if they have got a few relevance to what you intend to DO in university. If you occur to be, say, a Biology primary in university, a junior yr journalism magnificence will do you little or no well. If you're absolutely inquisitive about Journalism then take it. Same with your whole different categories. With a three.7 GPA you've a bit of of suppleness at school decision. Take what you wish, for god's sake, it is prime institution.
