Many factors come into play, a female can ovulate, from stress, over exercises, emotional upset, under exercising, too much caffeine, lack of sleep, etc. The list is endless. 3 days before and 3 days after your period are very unsafe. Also you definately want to be very careful the 10-16 days following the start of your period. It seems like alot of time to be careful but that is just the extra safe time. In reality a woman only has a 20% chance a month.Be careful those times and other times you should be ok.... good luck

Ok well truthfully there is no real Safe time. Especially since male sprem can live for sometimes longer than 24 hours inside the woman. The only definite pregnancy prevention is abstinence but condoms and contraception can raise the "safe" odds significantly. But again it is not perfect.

It's 3 days before your period and 3 days after your period.
The time around ovulation, what Cister suggested, is the most probable time to get pregnant, which is why she did. Nothing's guaranteed though, I have a friend that got pregnant while on the pill.

In the old days they would say 3 days before and 3 days after the ovulation, which usually is around the 14th day.
This site is simple and clear, but remember, not always safe:

unless you are using a method of birth control, have had your tubes ties, or had a hysterectomy, they are all unsafe.
