there are some legimate people who get welfare, but alot that abuse the system. That's becoming the american way these days. It's not "what can you do for your country", it's "My country owes me for my doing nothing".

You are misinformed about welfare. First, welfare grants (as in money) is minimal to the nation's budget. People can only have a maximum of 5 years to draw welfare grants and they are taken off the rolls whether they have a job or not. However, generally, people only stay on welfare for just long enough to find a job. Only about 20% stay on the full five years. There are habitual, or long term welfare recipients, such as disabled people, mentally challenged people, the elderly and a small percent who manage to rip the system. You would compare welfare grants (money) like a speck of pepper on a dinner plate in relation to the nation's budget. (Just look at the billions spent in Iraq and not necessarily for the soldiers.)
The real cost of welfare is Medicaid. That is where people receive assistance for medical care. This country is lacking in good health care service and many working people cannot get jobs that provide health insurance coverage so they may have to ask for assistance for medical reasons; however, many of them are turned down and just have to die. Medicare is set up for retirees and is not like Medicaid as it is associated with people on social security; however, many elderly have so little social security coming in that they may also need assistance of Medicaid.
Believe me, no one wants to be on welfare. It is so little income and food stamps that the lifestyle is just barely getting by. A lot of people on welfare do without many things that most of us consider essential. Many people are humiliated to even have to apply for it.
Welfare is doing it's purpose which is to get people through a period in their life that is of poverty. Then, they get back on their feet when they get an job and gladly so.
Where welfare is paid back is when a child is on welfare and Medicaid and the non custodial parent has to pay child support. When that money is received, it goes to the state as long as the child is receiving assistance. When the mother is off welfare assistance, then the child support goes to her, but a portion of it is held back to pay off the state debt. A noncustodial parent could be paying of a child support debt long after the child has grown up and become emancipated if it is still owed to the state.
As far as helping drug addicts, etc., well, look at the harm they cause other people if they are roaming the streets? They want a hit so bad, they accost people on the street to rob them. Also, we as a nation help so many other countries even, why wouldn't we want to help our own citizens get their lives back?
I guess you are lucky you have never had to be without, but it could happen to any one of us at any time. Our jobs are leaving our country at a rapid rate. College graduates are lucky to make $30,000 in this country now. Healthcare expenses are skyrocketing and jobs are being shipped out of the country on a daily basis, even telephone jobs!
If there ever comes a time when you need to ask for some kind of help, you should remember this comment you made.

The idea of it originally came from the PWA & WPA programs started by Roosevelt after the Great Depression ended. It was meant as a way to get folks back to work, back on their feet and able to fend for themselves again.
Welfare sort of started out by helping poorer, inner city women whose husbands or boyfriends left them high and dry with kids, paying no child support.

FDR first came up with welfare to employ people as public servants to sort mail and clear hiking trails. When they ran out of special works projects, they started giving out money.
It is an obsolete system which is why it is getting so much attention in the way of reform.

Instead of B**ching about a problem, write your congressman/woman and DO SOMETHING about it. Just remember, many babies, young children and infants get their food from this.
Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater!

people on welfare should not be allowed to vote. that would get rid of it. the politicians would not benefit from pandering to illegals and poor people who crank out babies for another check
