I agree with you for the most part. While I don't agree they should face imprisonment, I do think they need to cut down on the handouts. We had an article run in the Minneapolis Star Tribune a few years ago about the welfare system here in MN - which is a very liberal system. We basically hand out money to anyone, even if they just moved to the state last week. But we finally put into play a welfare reform system which put a limit on the time frame in which you can claim welfare. Anyway, the article profiled two seperate welfare recipients. One was a woman whose husband left her with three children after she was diagnosed with MS. She was struggling with her disease and trying to go through government programs to re-train her for a new job. She was totally embarrassed to be on welfare, and was determined to be off within the year, even though she was broke and getting more and more disabled. The other gal they talked about had never been married and had 5 children under the age of 10 with 4 different men. She moved here from Chicago and was really upset about the new bill since she felt it was her right to have children at a young age and stay home with them. I can't tell you how mad she made me. Like it was up to the government to support her. For the record, I am single and would LOVE to have children. Unfortunately, I could not support them on my own. And I would DIE before I made them welfare recipients.
In my opinion, welfare was made for people like the first lady in the story. But unfortunately, I think the second gal is a good portion of the recipients. So many abuse the system, it's a joke. That's where the US government falls short. They are too willing to hand it out without making the recipient responsible. It's a never ending cycle. Statistics show, children who grow up on welfare return to the welfare system as adults.
Why work when you can get paid to loaf??

I think that payback or imprisonment is alittle bit harsh. I do believe that alot of people abuse the system. It makes me very mad. There are alot people that have limitations due to learning issues and physical issues. I have no problem with them receiving help.
I think that the government needs to make stricter guidelines for the welfare system. More follow-up needs to be done. There has to be more accountability on the receiver end of it.
We adopted 2 children from South Korea. There is no welfare system there. You are on your own if you have a child and you are not married. On top of that, you are also an embarrassment to your family. They quite often disown you. You are totally on your own to live with the choice you made.
It is way to easy to get welfare here.

People do abuse it! And its not right. Something should be done about career welfare cases. Now someone that has a bonifide disability, I have no problem with helping them, but people that are just too sorry or lazy to support themselves, or women that have babies just to collect a check should be banned for life!
Don't give me the sad Lib story of "its hurting the children!" If mom can't make it with child support coming in, maybe mom isn't the best one to have custody. Now ,if she isn't getting child support, thats another issue.
But bottom line is, there are too many people getting welfare in this country and the laws ned to be changed/enforced where the hard working Americans aren't burdened for life with some that are deadbeats.

I'm going to get a bunch of thumbs down but what the hey. 2 things are different. Politically: America wants their oil. Morally: (here it comes) Iraqis are truly poor and down trodden while every American has an opportunity to succeed....I mean it is supposed to be the land of opportunity right? Welfare is supposed to be a helping hand in desperate times but it has unfortunately become a lifestyle for too many.

Wow are you compassionate.....you must be rich. All people on welfare are not addicts, or want to be on Welfare. Some people have disabilities that enable them to work. Some have lost a spouse to death and can't afford to live a life of luxury. Everyone doesn't abuse welfare. With the cost of living in the USA ...if you can't afford college or get a factory job with good pay then you may end up needing an extra hand yourself. Ever see a homeless person begging o the street?? Think that's by choice ??Everyone is not born the right skin color or with a silver spoon in their mouth.

It started in 1964 with prez Johnson's 'great society'. It soon turned into the biggest disaster inflicted on the American public since the Great Depression. It was a grand delusionary scheme by the first 'modern' liberals to "fight poverty". It ripped families apart, took away parental rights to raise your kids properly, created generations of irresponsible, whiney, uncontrollable, one parent kids that were not taught honor, respect for life, or the truths they needed to learn. It was supposed to be a thirty year "social experiment" that Clinton extended to try to get votes. The results were predictable. When government tries to run our lives, we are doomed to suffer. It's the great liberal plot to degenerate America down to liberal's low standard of morals and responsibility!

because everyone doesn't abuse it and it helps some people... why don't conservatives ever "tell the good side" of welfare?
there is someone out there that abuses almost everything that you can think of... it doesn't mean you should stop doing everything though...
if you let one bad apple spoil the bunch in every instance... soon nothing gets done, because you dismantled everything...
does anyone have any facts to back up any of the opinions on here? or is it just "I have a feeling?"

The point is it's a reason to collect taxes. You are correct, government has no business in this field. This is something for the private sector.
The answer to your second question is the same.

The National-Union believes that protection against fraud should be reinforced within the system to end abuses but the entire system still is neccesary to end poverty. The National-Union sees welfare as an opportunity to help individuals receive job training for advancement, http://www.voteprimous.com

If I tell you someone attack our USA, you will support me.
If I give money to support children, children and the people without kids will not support me.
