Kindling wood is wood that is cut into strips about an inch square or so. Its used to start fires and works best if it has little curls cut out on the sides of it(feathered).

Small pieces or strips of wood that will catch fire easier than a stick of firewood. It is used to kindle the fire long enough for the larger sticks to catch fire and burn.

Small pieces of wood that you start your fire with.
Use corks to start your fire faster ---
Store corks ina sealed jar filled with rubbing alcohol (for safety reasons do not store near the fireplace!). Throw a cork under the kindling and newspaper and light it to get things crackling faster.
Reward -
Less fanning the flames and more time to uncork a bottle by the fire.

All of these answers are great, but I'd like to add one more sure fire way of starting your fires! My son's boy scout troup uses and thus, recycles, dryer lint.
Nothing goes up in flames and stays in flames faster. Try it! Satisfaction gauranteed!
