My doctor also told my that I could take Tums, but for me the only thing that help was a big glass of milk(and I hate milk) I used to just hold my nose and down it, and relief was on the way, temporarily at least. When you go to bed, elevate yourself with a few pillows to help keep the acid down. It is caused by the baby pushing on the stomach causing the acid to rise, so you can't get rid of it completely. Some people say that women get heartburn because their babies have a lot of hair, which is a wives tale of course. But my 2nd pregnancy I had awful heartburn, I used to wake up choking on the acid. My little girl was then born with thick black curly hair that I could put pig tales in from the day she was born LOL.

Try eating smaller meals a few times during the day rather than one or two big meals
Sit up straight when eating as this will take the strain off your stomach
Avoid spicy or fried foods
Sleep well propped up; use lots of pillows on your bed
Drink plenty of milk and always keep a glass nearby in case you wake up with heartburn during the night
Don't eat or drink before you go to bed
Don't take antacid tablets before checking whether they are safe during pregnancy
Reduce concentrated sugars and fats
Eat more complex carbohydrates such as breads, cereals, pasta, rice and whole bran
Hope this helps you!
Good luck!*

The babies are weighing heavily on your diaphragm. So the pressure is causing acid reflux. Try eating smaller meals or snacks several times a day rather than a meal 3 times a day.

Take a Tums at the first sign of heart burn. A carbonated soft drink will also offer you some ability to burp some gas bubbles up and release some pressure. Stay away from gas causing foods. Also your vitamins can cause this. Prenatal vitamins have extra IRON. Don't be embarrassed to BURP! Do so as often as you feel. Also take a poop as often as you can. Gases build.

Try to prop your head and upper body on a couple of pillows when you lie down so the babies weight can't smother you.

Congratulations on the babies!

Unforutnately the heartburn is a side affect of the pregnancy. A good way to help reduce this froma nursing perspective is to remain sitting upright for at least 30 minutes after eating, slow down eating. Drink plenty of fluids, mild walking for excerise. Eating smaller meals more frequently will also help. Eating foods with less acid will also help and slowing the pace of eating is also another good strategy. Hope this is helpful.

I have massive heartburn as well,
try eating a slice or two of bread
an apple

& lay on your left side

otherwise I use tums--sometimes stuff works, sometimes not.
it's gotten so bad that no matter what I did/took, it was still there.

good luck-I feel for ya!!

I would try eating less amounts during a sitting -- don't allow you stomach to get to full. Another idea is to cut down on acidic food such as tomato made products, and orange juices. Surprising enough, from what I understand, bananas are even considered acidic.

Since you have tried the tums and Maalox, why don't you try a small cold cup of water with a few teaspoons of baking soda.

I thought I had heart burn in the past but it was my lungs sucking acid out of my stomach while I was asleep. I'll explain. (I'm overweight but this can apply to pregnant people as well). When I sleep I snored really really loudly which happens when your airway is restricted. Then your airway can actually close up and your lungs are still sucking in. They can't take air in though the mouth/nose and the suction pulls the acid up form your stomach to your throat. (Then your body realises there is not enough oxygen in your blood so it pumps adrenaline to your heart which brings you just about all the way out of sleep so you breath again. The process repeats as your muscles relax. - Makes for a really tired person the next day - And it can take ages to discover why).

It's really just a possibility. And a doctor would have to give you advice on that!

All my doctors say it it perfectly safe to take Zantac 150 2 times a day when needed for heartburn. I have acid reflux so my heartburn is like fire when i'm preggo. tums, pepcid AC, and zantac 150 work for me.
