You must be thinking that you are typing on the keypad of a calculator.
There are not even addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on a keyboard of a computer. Only the plus (+) sign, minus (-) sign, asterisk (*) and forward slash (/).

It's in the Insert Menu, Look for Symbol and scroll through there to find the radical

Hold down the alt key while you type 251, then let go of alt. √.
