My son is sufferring from Gastroparesis for the past 6 years now. Apart from all the problems associated with it, he often gets heartburn at night. I know its not good to use Antacids all the time and the doctors are of no help. Can anyone suggest any natural harmless way to reduce heartburn?

I would like to suggest a wonderful book by Sherry Rogers, M.D. called "No More Heartburn". She thoroughly explains the many causes of heartburn and how to effectively treat them. The book is available at Amazon.com or from the publisher at 1-800-846-6687.

Best wishes and good luck. May God bless you for your concern and willingness to help your son with a difficult challenge rather than just doing the easy thing (antacids).

Use Tums or such before bed is okay.
Simple antacids are given daily in most adult care centers to the elderly as a simple source of calcium, as well as for heartburn. There is no problem with taking them.

He can also limit what he eats at night - nothing spicy, tomatoes, onions, and so forth. No eating or drinking anything except water for at least three hours before bedtime. No water for one hour before bed. Raise the head of the bed up, so he is not laying flat.

When I have had a lot of heartburn and indigestion, I have taken peppermint capsules. Peppermint is a natural aid to digestion and when taken in the capsule form it allows the pill to release the peppermint where it is needed. This helps to ease the acid.

Your son could also drink peppermint or mint tea to help as well. It would have the same beneficial properties as the capsule but in a minty drink.

Please see the below for more detailed information from the University of Minnesota.

I now now take enzymes and the apple vinegar and Alvera. I slowly went from antacids to these things over time, after doing antacids for fifty years. It seems food don't digest and you will get a burning, the antacid will get quicker relief but the other things will last longer.

and oh yes I ceased drinking all cokes or any other soda drinks, and started eating slower

Taking the vinegar is simply moronic. You can safely take the tums at night, or even an otc prilosec. These methods will reduce the amount of acid in the stomach at bedtime. With a less then normal amount of motility it is a good idea to avoid eating for more then the typical 2 hours prior to bedtime.
