Most often people who are learning a new language try to translate word-for-word from their native languages. Chinese does not use a separate form for a plural noun. Another frequent source of confusion is the word "the," which doesn't really have any rules in English ("I went to the hospital" versus "I went to school"). So, people can be confused and say, "I like to read the books in my free time," or "Where is bathroom?"

Grammatical Langauge Science evolved in Europe and the result was the current style of descriptive langauge which is used today and was generally forced onto other langauges. However, in Asia, this type of langauge science never emerged so basically the current system of using count words in conjunction with nouns is still in place. Most other langauges don't have dedicated count words for things such as units of paper, cylinderal objects, books, etc.. Japanese and Chinese both use count words to describe how many. Knowing the count word, you automatically understand what the object is without having to mention the object(noun) in a sentence.

Perhaps the grammatical rules in their mother tongue do not specify adding -s or -es to make a noun plural. Old habits die hard. You might find yourself making similar errors in learning to speak Mandarin or something.
